Kingston Jamaica, Roots and Culture
Kingston Jamaica is the largest city and capitol of Jamaica and is where the culture and industry of Jamaica has its roots. This city is also the largest English-speaking city in all the Caribbean. Kingston is located on the southeastern side of the island. It is surrounded by Kingston harbor (among the largest in the world) on one side and the Blue Mountains and Red Hills on the other. The Blue Mountains are at the northern part of the city and are some of the most beautiful mountains in the Caribbean. The Blue Mountains are probably known because of the famous Blue Mountain coffee which is produced there. These mountains are an excellent getaway for hiking. There are many trails, water falls, and birds (for the birdwatcher).
Of all the places in Jamaica, I know Kingston the most. It is where I spent most of my time as a young boy and where most of my family still live. I went to school (Vaz Preparatory School, Jamaica College, etc.) there as well and enjoy great memories of the city.
Kingston Jamaica is a great city to visit if you are interested in the true politics and running of the island. If you are interested in the history of the island and what makes Jamaica what it is today. It can be quite a shock to some people who only view Jamaica as beaches and resorts. Kingston is where much of the commercial part of the island originated. It is where most think of when they think of Reggae music as many of Jamaica's reggae studios are located here. In fact many famous reggae artists are from Kingston. Reggae artists such as Buju Banton, Sean Paul, and Beenie Man are from this city. Some of the attractions found in Kingston or on its outskirts are Hellshire Beach, Devon House, and Port Royal. In my opinion the best part of Kingston is the culture and ability to really learn about the Jamaican people. There is a great deal of activity and things to do when you travel to Kingston Jamaica which can become quite overwhelming as it is a very busy and intense city. It is important to know your surroundings. Don't just take the word of the locals, plan your outings and trips well. Though Kingston can be great fun and full of adventure it is not for the faint of heart.
Kingston Travel Tips:
